Skylight Blinds and Shades
December 22nd, 2006
One downfall of standard skylights is that they do great at illuminating otherwise dark interior spaces, but there is no way to ‘”turn them off.” Hanging window blinds over skylights is clumsy, at best. Skylight manufacturers have worked around this problem by introducing integrated skylight blinds and shades.
Some types of skylight shades are:
Light-blocking shades
These virtually turn day into night. They are made of aluminum-coated fabric and are extremely energy efficient. Velux offers a new model with a built-in solar battery which means no wiring.
Cellular shades
These diffuse and soften the light coming in. This means that glare is reduced on television and computer screens, and furniture and carpeting is protected from fading.
Venetian blinds
Normally seen on windows, these are great at redirecting and reducing incoming light while protecting privacy. They’re made of aluminum, which makes them ideal for humid environments such as the kitchen or bathroom.
Heat-blocking awnings
the most effective way to prevent heat buildup is to install a heat-blocking retractable awning. These roll over the exterior of the skylight at the push of a button, so the heat never even enters the house.
