Taking Down Storm Windows – Screening Broom
April 6th, 2007
As winter’s storm windows come down, it’s time to let the outdoor air in… but make sure that’s all that comes in.
Inspect all screen windows carefully before you put them in place. All it takes is a small hole and a pregnant insect to guarantee a summer of dodging flies. To repair a hole that’s a quarter-inch or smaller just patch it with clear glue.
If it’s bigger than that, you need to:
- Buy a piece of replacement screening that’s larger than the damaged area.
- Remove a half-dozen strands on all four edges, leaving single strands sticking out along each edge.
- Overlay the patch screening on the damaged area and weave those loose strands through the old screening to anchor the patch.
If the hole is bigger than, say, the bottom of the coffee mug, you’re better off replacing the whole screen. And chances are, your local hardware store has all the materials you need and can even replace entire screens.
